Dr. Brinckman highly recommends all patients have a digital image of the retina annually with the Optos digital imaging system. The fee is only $35 and generally not covered by insurance.
Retinal problems such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal holes or detachments and diabetic retinopathy can now be seen without dilation for most patients. All of these retinal problems can lead to partial loss of vision or blindness. In addition, systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected during a digital retinal exam.
Early Detection is Crucial
Advantages of the optomap:
- Annual eye wellness scan becomes part of the permanent record.
- A complete view of the retina is seen quickly without dilation.
- No blurred vision or light sensitivity.
- No wasted time waiting for your eyes to dilate.
- Fast, easy and comfortable – You get to see your retina today.
Side Effects of Dilation
While beneficial for ocular health exams, side effects of dilation include, but are not limited to, blurred vision, light sensitivity, problems with glare and blur associated with near work. Additional drops for brighter examination lights are necessary with dilation. Sunglasses may be needed (provided as a courtesy b y our office) to drive safely after having your eyes dilated. These side effects vary in duration and typically may last 2-8 hours.
